Robbie out of their League

PHIL OAKEY of The Human League could not believe it when Robbie Williams covered his group's song Louise for his 2006 album Rudebox.

But the singer has written off Robbie's reunion with Take That as a publicity stunt to shore up the band's reputation in Europe.

Phil has sold 20 million records with the League, including their iconic 1981 album Dare featuring hit single Don't You Want Me?, which topped the charts in Britain and America.

He must be the only person in UK music not pleased to see Robbie reunited with Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Jason Orange.

Phil said: "I'm a bit disappointed Robbie is back with those people. I don't approve.

"Take That are an entertainment band. It's just a commercial idea. "It's as simple as Take That don't sell very well in places like Germany and Robbie does - so let's get more punters in. I don't think Take That have made any decent records."

When I told Phil that Back For Good (1995) and Patience (2006) are two of the best three-minute pop songs in recent years, he said: "You're kidding me, winding me up."

But he added: "I loved Robbie's version of Louise. I've met him a couple of times and he's a real nice geezer - he goes out of his way to be friendly."

The League play HMV Picture House in Edinburgh on December 14 to promote Credo, their first album in 10 years.

And Phil is determined the group - which features Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall - don't rely on a reputation achieved by classic hits such as Open Your Heart, Mirror Man and (Keep Feeling) Fascination.

He said: "Pop music can do two things - it can make you feel comfortable, like eating a treacle tart with custard, or it can excite you.

"My band has always been about excitement and innovation. I believe every song should have at least one thing people have never heard before.

"But pop has become more like karaoke so we've got to champion the innovative side.

"Hearing David Bowie and Roxy Music made my adolescent years worth living. Without them I'd have gone into a deep depression."

Phil can't wait to hit the capital. He said: "I love Scotland. We started our career there with our first single Being Boiled released on Edinburgh indie label Fast Product in 1978
